GOIS Conference: Opportunities and Risks for the Defence Industry in a Changing Global Security Environment
28 November 2022
10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Military Academy Maribor, Engelsova 15, 2111 Maribor
In an ever-changing geopolitical, technological, and climate context, strengthening the capabilities of the European Union and its member states to counter rapidly evolving multi-layered threats is essential. Therefore, the European Commission is presenting various initiatives and allocating substantial resources to contribute to European defence and protection, encompassing all challenges from conventional defence industry and equipment to cyber, hybrid and space threats, military mobility, and the significance of climate change, as well as a roadmap for key security and defence technologies. Slovenia is also allocating significant resources for defence, protection and security, and is preparing various programs and projects. How are Slovenian companies keeping pace with this and how do they fit into global value chains? What challenges does the European, and consequently the Slovenian defence industry face?
At the Defence Industry Cluster of Slovenia, we strive to strengthen the competitiveness of Slovenian companies in the field of defence, protection and security, and cooperation with relevant institutions. Therefore, we invite you to the conference where representatives of state and research organizations and successful entrepreneurs will discuss current trends, opportunities, and industry risks in the changing global geopolitical, technological, and climate environment.
At the conference, which will take place in the auditorium of the Military Academy Maribor, the opening addresses will be delivered by Marjan Šarec, Minister of Defence and Dr. Branko Lobnikar, State Secretary at the Ministry of Interior, while Member of the European Parliament, Dr. Klemen Grošelj will also speak about technological, defence trends and geostrategic shifts.
The main focus of the conference will be on presenting current and future needs and planned investments of Slovenia’s armed and security forces, cooperation in the EU and NATO, technological trends, and research and development programs in Slovenia and the EU (EDA, ESA). Since the existence and further development of the defence industry is crucial for Slovenia, both from a national and collective defence and security perspective, the panels will discuss how the state cooperates with and supports the Slovenian (defence) industry in this field, which is becoming an increasingly penetrating and recognizable economic sector in Slovenia with high-tech solutions globally, how companies are keeping up with this in terms of technology and offerings, and how such companies are supported by the banking sector. Besides equipping armed and security forces for national security, the defence industry is very important for directing development and early adoption of new technologies in the national economy, which then also enter civilian markets. The conference will offer an opportunity for companies to meet with representatives of state institutions (B2G) as well as networking and seeking common interests between companies (B2B).
