📍 Educational day for banks: the growing importance of the defense sector and dual-use goods
We attended a training day for bank representatives, which was aimed at providing a deeper understanding of the field of dual-use goods and defense products. This is a subject area that has gained increasing relevance in recent years, also in the context of the functioning of the financial sector and the broader regulatory environment.
The event provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the current regulatory framework, key definitions and practical challenges that institutions face in assessing risks, implementing compliance procedures and deciding on business relationships with companies from the relevant sectors. The discussion particularly highlighted the importance of clarity of rules, predictability of decisions and coordination of approaches between different stakeholders.
đź’¬ The final part of the professional event also included a moderated discussion led by Boštjan Skalar, Director of GOIS – Defense Industry Cluster of Slovenia, g.i.z. The discussion was aimed at an in-depth professional dialogue on key issues related to operations in practice, in particular:
• definitions and interpretations of policies relevant to banks and the financial sector
• practical challenges in dealing with companies in the defence sector
• ensuring greater legal and business predictability of the environment
• demarcation between the defence and arms industries in the context of financing and compliance
• harmonization of ESG frameworks with investments in the defence sector
• jurisdictional issues and dual-use certification procedures within the European regulatory framework
The discussion highlighted the importance of ongoing professional dialogue between all stakeholders involved. Only through enhanced cooperation and a more unified understanding of regulatory requirements in practice can we contribute to a more stable, predictable and efficient decision-making environment and the long-term development of the field.
